The issue of the sex trade has been much on my heart lately, and I have just learned that I may be working in Rio de Janeiro for a few months. Does anyone have information about the sex trade in Brazil? I would like to know how to effectively pray while I am there.

Estimates are that there are anywhere from 250,000-500,000 children exploited for prostitution in Brazil. Many of these are exported throughout South America, and to the US, Europe, and Japan. The current "market value" of a Brazilian woman is about $15,000 USD. There are an estimated 241 trafficking routes in Brazil. Another common exploitation is child sex tourism, which exists mostly in Brazil's northeast coastal and resort areas. The majority of these "tourists" are from the US and Europe.
Forced labor is also still a significant issue in Brazil. It is estimated that up to 100,000 men are subjected to slave labor in remote plantations growing sugar cane for the production of ethanol. To a lesser extent, slaves are internationally imported to work in factories in major urban areas.
If you have any other questions I will try to answer them as best I can.
